The Workspace is an optional panel in conversational interviews where candidates type answers in code or plain text instead of, or alongside, speaking. Enable it once per interview, then choose for each topic or question whether the answer should be spoken, written, or either.

Enabling the Workspace

The Workspace is a per-interview setting for conversational interviews. It is off by default.

Open the interview's settings

From the AI Interviews dashboard, open your conversational interview’s Settings page.

Turn on Enable Workspace

In the Settings section, switch on Enable Workspace. This adds a Workspace panel to the candidate’s interview screen where they can write answers in code or plain text.

Set the answer format per item

Once the Workspace is enabled, every item in your interview (questions, topics, and scenarios) gets an Answer format selector. Review each item and decide whether the candidate should speak, write, or choose for themselves.
The Workspace is being rolled out gradually and may not be available on every account yet. If you do not see the Enable Workspace toggle, contact support to ask about access.

Answer Modes

With the Workspace enabled, each interview item has an Answer format that tells the AI interviewer how to collect the response. Use Written for items where you want to see exact output, such as a code exercise or a precisely worded answer. Keep Spoken for discussion-style topics so the interview still feels like a conversation.
Workspace answers are limited to 5,000 characters per item. Candidates see an error if they exceed this, so keep written exercises scoped to something that fits comfortably within that space.

Coding Answers

The Workspace has two tabs on the candidate side: a code editor for programming answers and a plain text area for prose answers and notes. In the code editor, candidates pick from these language options:
  • Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, Java
  • Go, C++, C#, Ruby, Rust
  • SQL
  • Any (candidate chooses)
There is no per-item language dropdown for recruiters. If a question must be answered in a specific language, state it in the question or topic text, for example “Solve this in Python”. The AI interviewer enforces the requirement during the interview.
The plain text tab works the same way for non-code answers: candidates type their response or notes directly into the panel while the conversation continues.

Workspace Answers in Reports

Everything written in the Workspace flows into the candidate’s interview report, so you can review the work exactly as it happened. Snapshots are seekable against the interview recording. Click a snapshot to jump the recording to that moment and watch how the candidate reasoned through the problem, not just what they submitted.
