Proctoring Settings and How to Change Them

Every test in an assessment carries its own set of proctoring settings. When you create an assessment, each test starts with sensible defaults for its test type, and you can adjust them per test from the assessment’s settings. Proctoring on Equip is powered by AutoProctor. Candidates see exactly which measures are active before they start, and they consent to the proctoring report being shared with you.

Available Settings

Each test has 11 proctoring toggles. Here is what each one does:

Setting	What It Does
Detect Audio	Records noise and audio cues in the background.
Detect Face	Captures a photo if the camera detects no faces (camera covered, or nobody in view) or multiple faces.
Detect Switched Tab	Detects when the candidate switches to a different tab or application.
Switched Tab Screenshot	Captures a screenshot of the tab the candidate switched to. Works on Chrome, Edge, Safari, and Firefox desktop browsers.
Take Random Photos	Captures a few photos of the candidate at random points throughout the test.
Prevent Multiple Monitors	Blocks candidates connected to more than one monitor from taking the test until they disconnect the extra displays. Requires a Chromium-based browser.
Capture Photo Before Start Test	Takes a photo of the candidate’s face before the test starts. For the first test in an assessment, this is enabled by default.
Enforce Full Screen	Candidates cannot take the test without entering full-screen mode. Recommended to discourage tab switching.
Enforce Desktop	Candidates can only use a desktop or laptop. Useful for coding challenges that need a large screen.
Record User Session	Records the candidate’s screen and actions (mouse clicks, keyboard typing) as they attempt the test.
Auxiliary Device	Candidates must pair their phone as a second camera watching their hands, keyboard, and screen.

Switched Tab Screenshot depends on Detect Switched Tab. Enabling the screenshot option automatically turns on tab detection, and disabling tab detection turns the screenshot option off.

Defaults by Test Type

New tests start with most settings on. The exceptions depend on the test type, because some measures make no sense for certain formats: for example, Detect Audio stays off for spoken-answer tests, where talking is the whole point. Auxiliary Device is off by default for every test type. You must enable it explicitly.

A few toggles are locked, not just defaulted. Camera-related options stay locked off for custom video response tests, because you already see the candidate on camera in every answer. Psychometric tests keep tab-switch detection locked off.

Changing Settings

Proctoring settings are edited per test after the assessment is created.

Create the assessment

Each test starts with the default proctoring settings for its test type.

Open the assessment's Settings

From your assessment dashboard, open the settings of the assessment you want to change.

Go to the Test Order tab

Find the test you want to modify and click Edit Settings.

Toggle the settings you need

Switch individual options on or off, then click Save Settings.

Click Update

Your changes apply to future attempts of that test.

The panel includes Enable All and Disable All links, so you can flip every toggle at once and then fine-tune from there.
