tl;dr: Standard proctoring catches AI tools opened in another tab. For stealth tools like InterviewCoder, or AI on a second phone, enable Auxiliary Device proctoring: the candidate pairs their phone with their computer, and the phone’s camera watches their keyboard, hands, and screen throughout the test or interview.

How Detection Works

The same layers are available for assessments and AI interviews (one-way and conversational). The first two layers come from Equip’s standard proctoring settings and anti-cheating settings.

Auxiliary Device Proctoring

Auxiliary Device works alongside the default proctoring settings of an assessment or AI interview.

How to enable it for assessments

Create or open the assessment

Proctoring settings cannot be edited during creation, so create the assessment first, then open it from your dashboard.

Enable Auxiliary Device in the Test Order tab

Turn on Auxiliary Device and click Update.

Auxiliary Device is the last option in a test's proctoring settings, which open from Edit Settings on the Test Order tab

Auxiliary Device proctoring is free, with no extra credit cost. It is disabled by default.

How to enable it for AI interviews

Open the interview's settings

Open the interview from AI Interviews and go to its settings.

Turn on Auxiliary Device under Proctoring Settings

Expand Proctoring Settings and turn on Auxiliary Device.
When creating an interview in the setup flow, the Enhanced proctoring level turns on Auxiliary Device along with the other options.

What candidates do

Scan the QR code

The candidate opens the test on a computer, then scans the QR code on screen with their phone to pair the two devices.

Record a scan of the surroundings

This video is uploaded for you to review later.

Position the phone

The phone’s camera feed shows their keyboard and hands, and Equip captures a screenshot of it every few seconds.
Candidates cannot skip pairing. If Auxiliary Device proctoring is enabled on any test, the questions will not load until a phone is paired.
If the phone locks, the candidate sees a warning on their computer that the camera feed is inactive and must fix it before continuing.

Reviewing Flags

With Auxiliary Device enabled, the candidate’s report adds the phone’s evidence: the surroundings video and periodic keyboard screenshots. For AI interviews, look in the report’s Proctoring tab. If the Trust Score is low, watch both for signs of a second device or another person.
If something looks suspicious but inconclusive, play back the Session Recording of the candidate’s screen.
