Where the issue occurred decides how to fix it. If the candidate never saw a single question, the cause is almost always their device or internet connection. If questions loaded, proctoring was already running, so the Session Recording shows you exactly what they saw.
Candidates sometimes run into trouble while attempting an assessment on Equip. In almost all cases, the problem is on the candidate’s side: their browser, device, or network. That is not to say the platform never has issues; when something does break on Equip’s end, we are notified automatically and usually fix it before anyone emails us.

Common Issues

Every candidate issue falls into one of two stages. Identify the stage first, because the troubleshooting path is completely different for each.
A candidate who has not yet seen any questions can click the same assessment link any number of times, as long as the link has not expired. Nothing is lost by retrying. See Resume Your Attempt for how resumption works once a test has started.

What to Check First

If the candidate cannot start the test

Before anything else, the candidate should confirm that proctoring works on their setup using Equip’s public proctoring demo. Attempting the demo tests shown before the assessment also automatically checks that their specific test type works on their device. If the test still will not load, ask the candidate to work through this ladder:
1

Check the webcam and microphone

If proctoring is enabled, verify the webcam and microphone are working.
2

Try incognito mode

Open the assessment link in an incognito or private window. This rules out interfering extensions and stale cache.
3

Try a different browser

We recommend Google Chrome. If Chrome does not work, try Safari or Edge. Firefox should be the last resort.
4

Try a different device

If nothing above helps, attempt the test on another computer.
Some test types (Programming, SQL, CSS, Excel, Typing) require a desktop or laptop. If the candidate is on a phone or tablet, ask them to switch devices first. See Device Compatibility.

If the issue happened during the test

If the candidate was able to load questions, you are in luck: proctoring started successfully, so their Session Recording is available. It replays the test exactly as the candidate saw it, including mouse clicks and typing. Use the recording to verify the complaint. If a candidate says a question never displayed or an option could not be selected, the same problem will be visible on playback.
Open the candidate’s report and go to the Proctoring tab to play the Session Recording. You can speed up playback and skip inactive sections. See Session Recording for details.

Contacting Support

If the checks above do not resolve the issue, Equip needs diagnostic information to investigate. What to send depends on the stage.

Reporting a pre-start issue

Since no recording exists yet, the candidate must capture one themselves using Jam, a free browser extension available on Chrome and Edge.
1

Install Jam

The candidate installs the Jam extension from the Chrome Web Store.
2

Record the tab

In a new tab, they open the extension and click Record tab.
3

Reproduce the error

They paste the assessment link and follow the steps until the error appears, then click Stop recording.
4

Email the recording link

Jam generates a URL starting with jam.dev. The candidate emails it to hello@equip.co, copies you on the email, and mentions the page URL where the error occurred.
The Jam link gives Equip a full recording of what the candidate saw, plus console logs and diagnostic data to pinpoint the failure.

Reporting a mid-test issue

For issues during the test, you report the issue yourself using the Session Recording. Email hello@equip.co with two things: the Session Recording URL copied exactly as it appears in your browser, and the time range of the issue, for example “the issue lasts from 1:05 to 1:20”.
Do not skip the time range. A recording can run for the full length of the test, and pointing us to the exact seconds where things went wrong speeds up the diagnosis significantly.
