In a Video Response test, candidates record video answers to your questions, and you watch the recordings later and award points. It is a quick way to assess communication skills and understand how a candidate thinks through a problem. Recording and uploading happen entirely inside Equip, so the experience is seamless for both you and the candidate. And unlike accepting a video the candidate recorded offline, the attempt is proctored, so you do not have to worry about scripted or edited answers.
Video Response tests work on mobile devices as well as desktops, so candidates can record answers from their phones.

Creating a Video Response Test

A Video Response test is created as a Custom Test first, then added to any assessment.
1

Open Custom Tests

On your Recruiter Dashboard, click Custom Tests in the sidebar.
2

Create the test

Select Video Response and click Create. Set a Title; you will use it later to find the test while building your assessment.
3

Add questions

Click Add Questions, type each question, and set its points. A Video Response test can hold up to 4 question screens.
4

Save and add to an assessment

Save the test, then add it to a new or existing assessment by choosing My Content when adding a test.
Like all custom tests, a Video Response test belongs to your whole team. Teammates can view, edit, and reuse it across multiple assessments, but it cannot be sent to candidates on its own; it must be part of an assessment. Like any other test, it costs 1 credit per candidate who attempts it.

Recording Settings

Each question has its own settings that control how the candidate records their answer:
Combine Auto-Start Recording with Answer Time to simulate real interview pressure: the candidate gets a fixed amount of thinking time, then a fixed amount of speaking time.

Retakes and Duration Limits

Retakes are controlled per question. When you enable Allow Retake, you set the exact number of re-recordings permitted for that question. Time limits for Video Response tests are set at the question level, through the Answer Time setting. There is no separate whole-test timer, and there is no assessment-level time limit on Equip.
Only custom tests let you configure timers. If you leave Answer Time off, that question does not restrict how long the candidate’s recording can be.

Grading Video Responses

Video Response tests are graded manually. Until you grade every response, the test is labeled ungraded, and the candidate’s overall score stays marked as ungraded too.
1

Open the candidate's results

From the assessment results page, click the candidate’s Video Response test score.
2

Find ungraded questions

Ungraded questions have a yellow outline labeled Not Yet Graded. You can also filter questions by Not Yet Graded, Correctly Answered, Wrongly Answered, and Unattempted.
3

Watch and award points

Play each recording, then click the pencil icon at the top right to award points. Test and overall scores recalculate automatically.
Ungraded submissions are easy to miss on a busy dashboard. Use the Show Ungraded filter on the results page to list every submission that still needs grading.
For a detailed walkthrough of the grading flow, including editing scores later, see Manual Grading.
