The Document question type lets you upload a single reference PDF and ask several questions based on it. You upload the document once, in a parent question, and candidates refer to the same document while answering every sub-question. This is ideal for case studies: add instructions to read the document, then follow up with MCQ, MCA, Short Text, or other question types that test how well the candidate understood it.

Attaching Documents

You add a Document question while building a Custom Test. The PDF lives inside the parent question, and the sub-questions sit underneath it.
1

Create or open a custom quiz

From the Assessments Dashboard, open Custom Tests and create a new quiz, or open an existing one.
2

Select the Document question type

Choose Document from the question type drop-down menu.
3

Add instructions (optional)

Enter any instructions for candidates in the Description Text field, for example “Read the case study below before answering.”
4

Upload the PDF

Attach the reference document to the parent question.
5

Add sub-questions

Create the questions that reference the document, and set points for each sub-question if required.
Timers work differently here: a time limit can be set only on the parent Document question, not on individual sub-questions. Points, however, are set per sub-question.

Document vs Comprehension

Document is closely related to the Comprehension question type. Both nest sub-questions under shared reference material; the difference is the format of that material.
If your reference material already exists as a PDF, use Document and upload it as-is. There is no need to copy the content into a text field.

How Candidates See Them

Candidates see the PDF at the top, with all sub-questions displayed at once underneath it. They can scroll through the document and answer the sub-questions in any order. Because everything is on one screen, candidates can move back and forth between the document and the questions freely until the parent question’s time limit (if you set one) runs out.
Each sub-question is graded by the rules of its own question type. MCQ and MCA sub-questions are auto-graded, while Short Text answers need manual grading.
