Ensuring candidates don't cheat: AI Proctoring
AI Proctoring
Equip has the most advanced anti-cheating capabilities across online assessment platforms globally. Our proctoring is fully automated and driven by AI. We have several settings you can enable within tests that also make it difficult for candidates to cheat. This article lists the different measures we take, and settings that are available.
How it Works
When a candidate starts a test, Equip automatically gains access to their:
- camera feed
- microphone feed
- device screen
Our AI then continuously monitors the candidate's activity via these feeds. At the end of the test, you will see a report that looks like the screenshot below. It has a Trust Score that tells you how likely it is that the candidate cheated. If it is, say, lower than 80% you can then look at the full report. The report has a list of all the violations, when they occurred and evidence (screenshot, audio recording, etc). You can see a full sample report on this link.

Different Proctoring Settings
Below, we list the different proctoring features available on Equip. In some cases, you can learn more about how the feature works and you can even try a demo.
Candidate Activity
- Number of Faces: Flag if no one is looking at the test, or if multiple people are. Learn More & Try Demo
- Audio Cues: Detect and record audio if there is noise. Learn More & Try Demo
- Tab or Application Switch: Detect and record a screenshot if candidate switches to a different tab or application, like ChatGPT or Google. Learn More & Try Demo
- Auto-submit on Tab Switch: If candidates switches out of the test more than
ntimes, automatically submit the test. Learn More - External Monitor: Detect if a candidate has connected an external monitor to their computer
- Go offline: Detect if a candidate turns their internet off. Our proctoring continues to work even then!
- Multi-session detection: If a test is resumed on a different browser tab, browser, device or IP address, it gets flagged
Test-taking Environment
- Full-screen mode: Force test to be attempted in a full-screen mode. They can't see other tabs or applications
- Copy-paste disabled: Candidates can't copy questions or paste text from a different tab or website
- Auxiliary Device: Candidate pairs their phone to the computer during the test. You get 360-degree proctoring
- Session Recording: See a video of the candidate's clicks, mouse movements, typing and all other screen activity
- Random Photos: Take photos of the candidate's camera at irregular intervals
Question Rendering and Selection
- Shuffle question order in Quizzes: Candidate A sees a question as Question 1. Candidate B sees the same question as, say, Question 20
- Randomize options in MCQs: Option 1 to Candidate A shows up as (say) Option 4 to Candidate B
- Shuffle Coding Questions: Different candidates see different programming questions
- Question Banks: Create, say, Physics and Chemistry Question Banks with 50 easy and 50 difficult questions. Create a Science Quiz that randomly picks 5 easy Physics and 10 difficult Chemistry questions
- Question Display Mode: Show questions one-by-one or all-at-once. Select time per question
Advanced AI Proctoring
- ID Card Verification: Candidate uploads an ID card when test starts. We match face and name
- Impersonation Detection: If two different candidates attempt the same test, we automatically detect it. We don't just take the photos, our AI automatically detects and flags that a different candidate attempted the test midway
- Device Fingerprinting: Detect the device and browser being used
- IP and Geotagging: Record the IP address for each session and reverse-lookup on it to find the geolocation
Why Equip's Proctoring Wins
- No other platform offers ALL these features
- Apart from ID Card Verification and Impersonation Detection, all other features are completely free!
- The Proctoring works even when there is no internet. Sounds crazy, but it is true. Try it yourself. Turn the internet off midway, commit a few violations and when you load the report, you will see those violations have been recorded
- No browser or add-on needs to be installed. Proctoring works on mobile, tablets and desktops across all major browsers.
Points to Note
Changing Proctoring Settings
If you are using Equip's content, you cannot disable Equip's default proctoring settings. Specifically, this means that every candidate must use a camera- and mic-enabled device to take the test. Read more about this here.
Trust Score
Apart from proctoring the test, Equip also calculates a Trust Score once the test ends. The lower the trust score, the more likely Equip thinks the candidate cheated on the test. So, instead of reviewing all the evidence, you can just look at candidates whose Trust Score is low. If the Trust Score is lower than 80% or so, you should look at all the evidence to see why the Trust Score was low.
