tl;dr: Invitations are for candidates and cost credits. Preview is for team members and is free

Testing an assessment

Once you create an assessment, you'd probably like to check if it is working fine. You may test it yourself or ask someone else on your team to do it. There are two ways to do this:

Invite and Preview

Invite—You can invite yourself or your teammate to the assessment. The actual questions will be shown, proctoring will be enabled, etc. This will cost you credits.
Preview—You, or someone from your team, can Preview the assessment. This will not cost you credits. You can even Preview the assessment as a candidate, so you will have to enable Proctoring, etc. You can preview the assessment any number of times.

Previewing an assessment

If you are only looking to check how the assessment works, what the flow looks like, etc, it is always better to Preview the assessment as it won't cost you any credits.
