# Candidate Session Recording

> Record and replay the candidate's screen and interactions during a test.

**Session Recording** is one of Equip's [proctoring measures](/ai-proctoring). It captures the candidate's screen and interactions while they attempt a test, so you can later replay the attempt exactly as the candidate experienced it.

## What Gets Recorded

When the **Record User Session** proctoring setting is on, Equip records the candidate's screen and actions throughout the test. Playback shows the session from the candidate's point of view.

| **Screen activity**     | Every screen the candidate moved through during the test |
| **Mouse activity**      | Cursor movements and clicks                              |
| **Keyboard activity**   | What the candidate typed                                 |
| **Equip notifications** | In-test prompts and warnings the candidate received      |

  Candidates see exactly which proctoring measures are active before they start, and they consent to the proctoring report, including the session recording, being shared with you.

## Turn On Session Recording

Session Recording is controlled per test through the **Record User Session** toggle in [Proctoring Settings](/proctoring-settings).

    In your assessment's settings, go to the **Test Order** tab.

  <Step title="Edit the test's settings">
    Click **Edit Settings** on the test you want to change.

  <Step title="Toggle Record User Session">
    Turn the **Record User Session** option on or off, then click **Save Settings**.

  <Step title="Update the assessment">
    Click **Update** to apply your changes.
  </Step>

<Note>
  Session Recording is on by default for most test types. It is off by default for Excel tests and for video-based test types such as Video Response, where the candidate is already on camera. You can change this default on both Equip Content and Custom Tests.

[AI Interviews](/one-way-vs-conversational) support the same proctoring options as assessments. When Session Recording is enabled, the interview report includes a session-recording tab as well.

## Playback

To watch a recording, click a candidate's score on the Results page to open their report, then open the **Session Recording** tab and press **Play**.

The player includes controls to speed up playback and to skip sections where there is no activity, so reviewing a long attempt takes only a few minutes.

  Use Session Recording together with the [Trust Score](/trust-score). If a candidate's score looks suspicious, watch their recording to see exactly what they did during the test before making a decision.

Playback is also the fastest way to verify a candidate's report of a technical issue, such as a question that did not load. If you need Equip's help, email [hello@equip.co](mailto:hello@equip.co) with the Session Recording URL and the time range where the issue appears, for example "1:05 to 1:20".
