# Multilingual Tests

> Offer questions in multiple languages and let candidates choose the one they are most comfortable with.

Equip lets you run the same test in more than one language. You write each question once per language, and every candidate answers the same questions with the same scoring, just in the language they chose.

## Enabling Multiple Languages

**Multilingual questions** are a feature of tests you author yourself, such as custom tests and AI-graded tests. You enable the languages you want to offer on the test, and candidates pick one before they start.

Equip's own question library is different: it is written and maintained in **English only**. If you need to assess candidates in another language, build the test with your own content.

## Per-Language Question Text

When a test has multiple languages enabled, each question carries **per-language question text**. You provide a version of the question for every enabled language, so you stay in full control of terminology and phrasing instead of relying on machine translation.

Only the text varies between languages. Points, timers, and grading settings belong to the question itself, so a candidate's score is comparable no matter which language they picked.

    Go to the settings of any custom or AI-graded test you want to make multilingual.

    Go to **Alternative Languages**, turn on **Enable Multilingual Questions**, and select the **additional languages** you want to offer.

    For every question, fill in the text in each enabled language. Review each version carefully, since candidates only see the version for their chosen language.

    Once saved, candidates who open the test are asked to choose a language before starting.

  Keep the difficulty and precision identical across languages. If one translation gives extra hints or is ambiguous, scores stop being comparable between language groups.

## The Candidate's Language Choice

Before the test begins, candidates see a **language selector** listing every language you enabled. They pick one, and all questions render in that language for the rest of the test.

Candidates can also respond in any language. This applies to typed answers as well as audio and video responses in AI-graded tests.

  The **English Communication (CEFR)** test measures English proficiency, so it is always delivered in English regardless of other language settings. See [Communication Test](/communication-test).

  The platform interface around the questions, such as navigation and instruction screens, stays in English. Candidates who need help with it can use their browser's auto-translate feature, like the one in Google Chrome.
