# Interview Languages

> Conduct AI interviews in 15 languages and regional variants, from English and Hindi to Spanish and German.

Equip's AI interviews are not limited to English. A **conversational interview** can run entirely in the language you choose: the AI interviewer speaks, listens, and asks follow-ups in that language. **One-way interviews** work differently: you control which languages candidates may use in their responses, question by question.

## Supported Languages

For conversational interviews, the **Interview Language** setting controls the entire session. The dropdown offers 15 options:

| Group                | Options                                                                     |
| -------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **English** | English (US), English (India), English (UK) |
| **Indian languages** | Hindi, Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Bengali |
| **Other languages** | Spanish (Spain), Spanish (US), French, German, Portuguese (Brazil), Italian |

<Tip>
  Where a language has regional variants, pick the one closest to your candidate pool. The AI's speech recognition and voice adapt to the variant you choose, so it matches how your candidates actually speak.
</Tip>

<Note>
  The interview language is a recruiter setting. Candidates do not pick a language themselves in a conversational interview; the AI conducts the session in the language you chose.
</Note>

## Choosing a Language

### Conversational interviews

  </Step>

  <Step title="Find the Interview Language dropdown">

  </Step>

  <Step title="Select a language">
    Choose from the 15 options listed above. The AI interviewer will speak, understand, and transcribe in that language for every candidate who takes this interview.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Note>
  If no language is selected, the interview runs in **English (US)** by default.
</Note>

### One-way interviews

One-way interviews use pre-set questions with recorded answers, so there is no live AI voice to configure. Instead, each question in the **template editor** has its own **response languages** selector.

Use the **Search languages** field on a question to add one or more languages candidates may answer in. The default response language is **English**.

### How the two settings compare

|                      | Conversational                                               | One-way                                                             |
| -------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **What it controls** | The language the AI interviewer speaks and understands | The languages candidates may use in their answers |
| **Where you set it** | Interview Language dropdown on the interview's settings page | Response languages selector on each question in the template editor |
| **Scope** | One language for the entire interview | Per question, with multiple languages allowed |
| **Default**          | English (US)                                                 | English                                                             |

<Warning>
  Set the language before inviting candidates, and keep your topics and questions written in that same language. A mismatch between the interview language and the language of your questions can confuse both candidates and the AI.
