# Equip Content vs Custom Content

> The difference between Equip's pre-built question library and tests you create with your own questions.

<Tip>
  Use **Equip Content** when you want a ready-made, curated assessment in seconds. Use **My Content** (Custom Tests) when you need full control over questions, points, timers, and the candidate experience. You can mix both in the same assessment.
</Tip>

Every test type in the assessment builder offers two sources of questions: **Equip Content**, drawn from Equip's pre-built question banks, and **My Content**, which is any [Custom Test](/custom-tests) you create yourself.

## What Is Equip Content

**Equip Content** is Equip's own library of curated questions, organized by skill and difficulty. You pick a skill and an experience level, and Equip assembles the test for you, so you can create a complete assessment in seconds without writing a single question.

Equip Content is built for fairness and integrity:

* Quiz questions are **randomized per candidate**: each candidate gets different questions from a large pool, in a shuffled order, with shuffled options. See [Same or Random Questions](/same-or-random-questions).
* Quiz questions stay **hidden from recruiters**, both during creation and in results, so the question bank cannot leak. See [Why You Cannot See Quiz Questions](/cannot-see-quiz-questions).
* **Timers, points, and negative marking are fixed**. Equip has tuned them to identify the best candidates fairly, and they cannot be changed. **Proctoring settings**, however, can be adjusted even on Equip Content.

<Note>
  For non-quiz Equip Content, such as Programming and SQL challenges, you can select the exact question and see it in candidate results. The hidden-question policy applies only to Equip quizzes.
</Note>

## What Is My Content

**My Content** refers to Custom Tests: tests you build with your own questions. You create them from the **Custom Tests** section in the sidebar of the Assessments Dashboard, then add them to any assessment.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Create a Custom Test">
    Open **Custom Tests** from the Assessments Dashboard sidebar, choose a test type, add your questions, and save.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add it to an assessment">
    In the assessment builder's **Tests** tab, pick the test type on the left, click **Add**, and choose **My Content** to select your test.
  </Step>
</Steps>

Custom Tests give you control that Equip Content does not:

* Write your own questions across 15 question types, from MCQs to Cloze, Comprehension, and Voice Input. See [Custom Quiz Question Types](/custom-quiz-question-types).
* Set **points and optional negative marking** per question.
* Set **time limits** per question or per test, and switch between one-by-one and all-at-once [display modes](/quiz-display-modes).
* See every question and every response a candidate submitted.

<Note>
  Custom Tests belong to your whole team. Teammates can view, edit, and reuse them across multiple assessments.
</Note>

## When to Use Each

Here is how the two options compare, feature by feature.

| Feature                                            | Equip Content                            | Custom Content         |
| -------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------- | ---------------------- |
| **Select questions** | No for quizzes; yes for other test types | Yes for all test types |
| **Set points and remove negative points for MCQs** | No | Yes |
| **Show all quiz questions at once** | No, always one-by-one | Yes |
| **See questions a candidate attempted** | No for quizzes; yes for other test types | Yes for all test types |
| **Set time per question or test** | No | Yes |
| **Set a time limit for the whole assessment** | No | No |

<Note>
  Neither option supports a single timer for the whole assessment. Candidates can take breaks between tests, so [time limits](/time-limits) apply at the test or question level instead.
</Note>

Choose **Equip Content** when speed and reliability matter most. The questions are highly curated, and the fixed timer settings are designed to keep results fair and comparable across candidates.

Choose **Custom Content** when the role demands questions specific to your company, or when you need control over points, timers, display modes, or full visibility into what each candidate answered.

<Tip>
  You do not have to pick one. An assessment can freely combine Equip Content and Custom Tests, for example an Equip quiz for screening plus a custom Video Response test for role-specific questions.
</Tip>

<Warning>
  Custom coding challenges are easy to get wrong: a small mistake in test cases or boilerplate can mark every submission incorrect. For Programming and SQL, Equip strongly recommends its own questions, which are battle-tested by thousands of candidates. See [Issues with Custom Coding Challenges](/custom-coding-challenge-issues).
