# ChatGPT and AI Usage Detection

> How Equip detects candidates using ChatGPT, InterviewCoder, and other AI tools during assessments, and how to review the evidence.

  tl;dr: Standard proctoring catches AI tools opened in another tab. For stealth tools like InterviewCoder, or AI on a second phone, enable **Auxiliary Device** proctoring: the candidate pairs their phone with their computer, and the phone's camera watches their keyboard, hands, and screen throughout the test. It is free, just disabled by default.

## How Detection Works

Equip uses a **layered approach** to AI usage detection. Each layer closes off a different way candidates might reach for ChatGPT or similar tools.

The first two layers come from Equip's standard [proctoring settings](/proctoring-settings) and [anti-cheating settings](/anti-cheating-settings). Stealth overlay tools and second devices are invisible to in-browser proctoring, so only the **Auxiliary Device** layer can catch them.

  Alongside these layers, every attempt records device fingerprints and IP addresses, and flags multi-session activity such as resuming the test from another browser or device.

## Auxiliary Device Proctoring

**Auxiliary Device** is an enhanced proctoring option that works alongside the default proctoring settings of an assessment. The candidate pairs their phone with their computer, and the phone acts as a second camera pointed at their keyboard, fingers, and screen.

### How to enable it

    Create a new assessment or open an existing one from your dashboard.

    In the assessment settings, open the **Test Order** tab.

    Turn on the **Aux Device** option for the test.

  <Step title="Save your changes">
    For an existing assessment, click **Update**. For a new assessment, click **Next** and then **Create**.

  Auxiliary Device proctoring is **completely free**. There is no extra credit cost; it is simply disabled by default.

### What candidates do

    The candidate clicks the test link on a computer or laptop. If they open it on a phone, they are asked to switch to a computer first.

  <Step title="Scan the QR code">
    Equip shows a QR code on the computer screen. The candidate scans it with their phone to pair the two devices.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Record a scan of the surroundings">
    Using the phone, the candidate records a sweep of their surroundings. This video is uploaded for you to review later.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Position the phone">
    The candidate places the phone so its camera feed shows their keyboard and hands. Equip captures a screenshot of this feed every few seconds.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Take the test as usual">
    Proctoring on the computer continues in parallel, exactly as it would without the auxiliary device.

<Warning>
  Candidates cannot skip pairing. If Auxiliary Device proctoring is enabled on any test, the questions will not load until a phone is paired.
</Warning>

On supported phone browsers, Equip keeps the phone awake for the whole test. If the phone still locks, the candidate sees a warning on their computer that the camera feed is inactive and must fix it before continuing.

## Reviewing Flags

At the end of the test, you review everything from the candidate's report. With Auxiliary Device enabled, you get the phone's evidence on top of the regular proctoring report.

| **Surroundings video**   | The candidate's room scan recorded on the phone before the test started                                       |
| **Keyboard screenshots** | Periodic captures from the phone camera showing hands, keyboard, and screen                                   |

Start with the **Trust Score** at the top of the report. If it is low, work through the violations and evidence, and watch the surroundings video and keyboard screenshots for signs of a second device or another person.

  If something looks suspicious but inconclusive, play back the [Session Recording](/session-recording) of the candidate's screen to see exactly what they did at that moment.
